Zetec Engine Package:
The Zetec Engine Package listed comes with the following standard options (please note that amendments can be made to order and prices will vary accordingly):
The Zetec engine package is the most common choice for new Birkin owners and it has been the standard recommended option for a number of reasons.
Cost:
The cost of these engines comparative to others such as the next generation Duratec is considerably lower. Most Duratec's, although a fantastic engine in their own right, begin their pricing including loom, computer and all other necessary parts at about $7000 to $8000 which is close to double the Zetec's. This is also true with other donor engines such as the Toyota 1ZZ and 2ZZ which fit and match many of other specifications on offer from the Zetec.
Age:
Another benefit that the Zetec has over most of the other engines on offer, with the exception of the Duratec, is age. Its common predecessor, the 4AGEs although still a great work horse for many existing Birkins are starting to become older and slgihtly more tired compared with the fresh Zetecs. Difficulty of ascertaining parts also becomes a problem as engines get older, where as this not an issue with the Zetecs.
Power:
The stock power that can be extracted from the Zetecs, although not mind blowing, is certainly enough for most owners. Pumping out HP, this ensures a relatively fast Birkin, without compromising the engines life with unnecessary modifications. If you are the type that is always wanting to tinker and play with the engines adding on additional or aftermarket parts, the Zetec also does has the capability to be modified and can reach in excess of 180-190HP with little effort.
Ease of installation:
Another large factor steering most owners towards the Zetec choice is the ease of which installation can be completed. Problems with other engines such as the 2ZZ (requiring crossmember alterations), or Duratecs (using complicated drive by wire technocogy) mean that structural or electronic changes will need to be made which can become expensive and time consuming if not performed by the owner themselves. Unlike these engines, the Zetec requires almost no changes or modifications in order to fit. Most of the changes required are only to the bellhousing of the gearbox which is all done in house and can be bought off the shelf.
